Round 6

Kanwal 2           Toukley 1

Back to our first round opponents & a chance to measure our improvement. Kanwal again got an early goal on us but we weren’t phased & put the attack straight back on them coming up with an equaliser. Your confidence in your talent is showing girls & was rewarded with a great team goal. Cleared from the back line, carried up the midfield with great a ball to the forwards, allowing Brooke G to out sprint the Kanwal backs, & slot it past the goalie. Players looking & picking out who is moving forward & others pre-empting where the ball is going & beating the defence. Kanwal knocked in another right on half time which was a heartbreaker. Good teams will always make you pay with any lapse in communication. Max handed out the directions during the break & the 2nd half continued the tight play. Our forwards getting some good ball from our tireless mids. We need to spread wide up front & remember not to crowd the ball making it easy for the defence to hone in on our play. And then the moment that is still flashing before my eyes. Larissa went as high as Warwick Capper to head the ball & clear it from our danger area. But so too did the Kanwal defence. The song says ‘Toukley Gunners are dynamite’, & this was proof, as the crack of heads was louder than the whip in the man from Snowy River, louder than Clint Eastwood’s magnum makin’ his day, & louder than the biggest firecracker on Chinese new year. The ball was cleared to safety, but the dynamite explosion left a split in Larissa’s forehead, & the claret went everywhere, & I mean everywhere. Thanks to Luen for the use of your white singlet to act as a pressure bandage. Don’t throw it out; it’s got that much red on it, that a truckie will take it to tie on long loads. Despite the great blood loss, & a few near faintings by surrounding players/supporters, Larissa carried on with her usual empathy, smiling & making sure the opposition was OK. Many thanks to the parents for their help with medical, shading, phone, & traffic direction work, & also to Kanwal for their support & good sportsmanship. We hope the other half of the collision is feeling much better. As for Larissa, the surgeon kept his work tight & ended up with 7 internal & 8 external stitches. Get better soon, we miss you already

Round 5

Kincumber 0    Toukley 1

A warm morning that led to a warm arvo. Great for the boisterous supporters but thirsty work for the girls. Kincumber came out with speed, & put us under pressure from the word go. Their passing & long game kept our backs flat out with Zellie pulling off some cracker body on the line saves. Phase two & the Gunners finally got some good possession, talking & giving each other support, & the game swung with the pressure now on Kincumber. 0 – 0 at half time & Coach Teena handed out the inspirational words needed, “get out their & win”. The girls 2nd half took off from where they left the first, full of running, talk, & confidence. Jo’s fitness work at training was coming in to play, & don’t worry girls, there’s plenty more of that to come. Renee slotted in a penalty to give us a 1-0 lead & we just shaved the crossbar missing a second. Great work at the back by Ashleigh & Laura, & big efforts by Larissa, Zellie & Luen, all crook but playing on for their team. A great win girls.

Round 3

Toukley 0          Killarney 4

Tough game against a well drilled side.

We never gave an inch, but those long shots at goal were hard to keep out.

Maybe our talk wasn’t up to scratch?  Maybe our marking wasn’t up to scratch? I’m itchy. Maybe our passing wasn’t up to our training standard?

One thing for sure, we don’t give up having a go. We were flat out all game & did a great job.

They maybe a gun side but wait till they meet us in round two. They’ll be lookin’ for Francis the mule but we’ll be bringing Mr Ed.

A horse is a horse of course!!

Round 4

Our sympathies to coach & players of Woy Woy team

Toukley 0          Woy Woy 0

Played at Pluim Park

Headquarters of the CC league & on the No. 1 Field – we are in the big time!

A night match that was cool in the air until we walked onto the park.

We attacked & attacked & attacked. Mids & forwards going gangbusters, Luen & Erin sending in some lovely balls but alas, great last line of defence & no goals. Then at the latter end of the half, our defence were woken from their slumber from some intense Woy Woy attack with Zellie pulling off a “how did she do that?” save. 2nd half was more end to end play, with the packed Pluim Park grandstand barely able to stay seated. Laura & Ashley were able to make the big decisions without any panic. (Unlike the marketing division of the company they have shares in) Some lovely runs down the line by our mids were spreading the opposition defence. Great shots by the Gunners just couldn’t find the net. We’ll need to practise those long goal shots to get over the defence is in our face play. A great game girls & no matter what the time or temperature is, watching you girls play, then smile & laugh after a game is way better than watching the fattest big loser, or I’m a better dancer than you, or border customs your in trouble patrol. You’re out in the real world

Toukley 1 – Kanwal 2

Yee haa, we can finally say goodbye to that not so hot but very humid summer, & bring on autumn & the start of the soccer season!

Our first game & we’re in the A’s. We started strongly & controlled the ball early with good passing. A pretty evenly matched first half with Kanwal firing in a long ball to go in 1-0 at half time. We were still soaking up Teena & Max’s advice from the half time talk when Kanwal slotted in another. This seemed to slap us to attention & our game began to come alive. Ashleigh was strong at the back while Renee’s switch to the front troubled the Kanwal defence. A well rewarded goal pushed us further & had everyone running. That fitness training on Tuesday nights is the carrot that is dangling for this part of the game. We kept peppering the goalmouth & the crowd couldn’t keep still, but alas, some great saves kept out the equaliser. A really great start to the season girls. Keep up the talking on the field & you will get to know each others game as the season progresses.
