Match Reports :
Round 16 vs Kincumber at Frost Reserve
With the team back to full strength for the first time since round 7,
it was time for our third shot at Kincumber. The boys pride took a knock against them last time, losing after leading 2-0 well into the second half.
On a ground better suited to mud wrestling than soccer, (we can call it that, now that the world cup is over!) the boys got off to a slow start, and when Kincumber scored first after some lazy (read nonexistent) defence, the team was under pressure.
Half time saw the team down 1-0, and after Martins encouragement, yes, he’s got his voice back, they took to the field with it all to do.
You couldn’t say it was a brilliant start, but as the half went on they improved and were able to exert some real pressure on Kincumber both in attack and defence. After a run by Corey resulted in a Toukley corner, Tom C curled his kick into the net, 1-1. As the half went on, Toukley had the best of the attacking opportunities, and another run by Corey deep down the Kincumber left side, and a pinpoint cross in, found Josh Spalding unmarked in front of goal to slot the winner, 2-1.
Best players were Josh Spalding who had his best game this year, Corey never stopped trying despite the heavy marking, and Cathal ran himself to a standstill as usual.
Round 8 15A Terrigal Vs Toukley 18th July 2010 at Fagans Park
What a sensational day weather wise. Martin was lost for words and I mean lost for words an OD on Strepsils still didn't help, Lucky one boys. Another loss against Terrigal they were always positioned well and quick on making a pass to a team member and strong with communication especially when they missed a goal…..
Dick had a few words to say at half time when we were down 1 nil. Although we had opportunities we were not able to complete the play and score a goal. Tom Carlson just missed out on a penalty shot which was close, Corey also missed out on two attempts which were close. We witnessed Jaydn save a couple of goals as well along with support from the backs. Passing to other team members was a bit ordinary but improved slightly in the second half which created a few openings but still left us scoreless. Few errors from both teams gave few penalties away but no points awarded. Terrigal had another opportunity in the second half to put another one away finishing the game 2 - 0.
Boy’s what’s happened to the passion the confidence and communication!
Congratulations to Terrigal on the day for a challenging game.
Thanks to Dick and Michael for supporting Martin on the day.
Round 14 vs Ourimbah at Harry Moore
For what seems like the first time in ages we played at home, against the well performing Ourimbah.
Toukley hit the lead after Cathal got us on the board with a sharp header from a Tom Carlson free kick. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to add to the score in the first half and went to the break 1-0 up.
To say Martin wasn’t happy with the first half performance……………
Ourimbah got the score back to 1-1 with an early goal and went 2-1 up a while later, which spurred the boys into action, not wanting to lose 2 games in a row.
Toukley attacked for the last 15 minutes and despite creating more scoring chances were unable to get the ball in the goal. Shots went wide and shots went over but shots wouldn‘t go into the net.
Two losses in a row see the team drop to third place.
A week off, then 6 games in 14 days including 3 in a row against Gosford coming up.
Should be fun.
The next round VS Kincumber at Mountains
SEVENTY.
The number of minutes in a game of soccer.
Not 30.
Not 40.
Hopefully we learned a valuable lesson on Sunday.
In A grade, every team is capable of beating you if you don’t put in for the full 70 minutes.
Clocking off with 20 minutes to go when 2-0 up won’t get you the points in this grade.
Lesson leaned, we hope.
Budgewoi and Gosford next weekend at home.
June 19th :
Round who knows vs WoyWoy at Austin Butler
We played Woy Woy at WoyWoy today and it shows how even this A grade competition is where even a team without a win can push the leading teams all the way. After their narrow 1 goal loss to Gosford last week the southerners were always going to be a tough opponent at home.
Goals were a lot harder to come by this week and it was well into the second half before Tom Carlson curled a corner into the net untouched to lead 1-0.
Woy Woy hit back just before the break when a run down our right hand side exposed our backs not marking up and they levelled at 1-1.
At the break the boys weren’t happy with their play by their own standards and agreed they’d have to lift to get away with the win.
Toukley had created more scoring chances but the ball just wouldn’t go into the net.
Finally Corey found his direction and slotted two goals in quick succession to give Toukley a 3-1 lead and a bit of breathing space.
However, nobody told WoyWoy that they were out of it and they struck back with a soft goal after a misunderstanding at the back to get to 3-2.
When the ref blew time we had got away with the win, now to play Kincumber tomorrow at the mountains.
June 12th :
Despite being two men down, the boys came out firing for the first 10 minutes scoring an early goal from a well positioned Keelan, (‘bout time ya got it under the cross-bar!). For once we didn’t fall asleep and came up with two more goals, one from the ever present/ever scoring Corey and a fluke chip shot from Cathal.
After the break the boys once again dominated, aided by some beautiful passing and through balls by Josh Spalding, one sending Corey down the field for his second goal. Killarney then struck back but some desperate defence and some great goal keeping from Jayden kept them at bay.
Following a rough few minutes, we were awarded a free kick outside the 18 yard box and after a brilliant kick from Tom Carlson, the ball was in the back of the net once again. Fatigue and injury started to plague both teams, resulting in many substitutions as the game wore on. Towards the end of the game Killarney made mistakes and Toukley capitalised, with an awesome left footed goal from outside the 18 yard box from Cathal.
The game ended at 6-0 and even Martin found a kind word or two to say. All in all the best game we’ve ever played. Keep it up boys.
Erratic, adj, characterized by a lack of consistency.
The 15A’s travelled to Ourimbah to take on the well performed Ourimbah 15A’s.
With Tom Sigley absent due to a wedding, (congratulations Tom!) we’d be below full strength for this game.
The warm up was a bit of a worry as their focus seemed to be missing, so how would
they perform?
The boys started well from the kick-off, and were controlling play well for the first five minutes, leading up to Corey making a run which left the Ourimbah backs grasping at air and beating the keeper to take an early lead.
Predictably, the Toukley players then went off the boil, and Ourimbah lifted after our early breakthrough, and when Ourimbah scored from a corner to level at 1-1, we had a game on our hands.
The half time break couldn’t come quick enough, with Martin asking the players the question… could they lift and play well enough to get the win?
Ourimbah scored again not long after the break, after a rare Toukley defensive lapse, to lead 2-1. With the Toukley attack needing sharpening up, Tom Carlson was moved up front and it paid dividends with Tom getting the equalizer with 10 minutes to go.
For the second week in a row, the boys attacked for the last 10 minutes chasing a win after coming from behind. Character building, but it would be better not getting behind in the first place!
If the players can put it together for the full 70 minutes they’ll be hard to beat.
Terrigal next week and you can bet they’ll be out for revenge for the first round defeat!
Intimidation; to make timid, overawe, by inducing fear.
The boys travelled to Budgewoi Oval for the local derby against neighbours Budgewoi, last year’s runners up.
With a target on Toukley’s back the size of Martin’s butt, as the only unbeaten team in A grade, you could put the house on Budgewoi being up for this game, and we needed to be too.
Unfortunately, for the first 35 minutes you’d have thought Budgewoi was the undefeated team in A grade as they dominated all over the park.
Budgie simply wanted it more, and played with more aggression than Toukley.
A defensive lapse and an absence of any defensive pressure let the Budgie midfielder stroll through into the box and line up an easy shot that left Jaydn no chance. 0-1.
This was a fair reflection of the first half, as the Budgie players were prepared to put their bodies on the line to win the ball in the air and on the ground. Unless the Toukley players can produce the same sort of commitment week in week out, the stay at the top of the table will be brief.
Martin’s not so gentle words of encouragement at half time stung the boys into a much better second half.
The Toukley players went out and played with more purpose and guts with Corey finally getting the equalizer with 10 minutes to go. With an unlikely victory in their sights, the boys lifted and only desperate defence by Budgie kept the score to 1-1 at full time.
Toukley’s best were, Carl, again who never stopped trying, Jeremy did some good work at the back. Sigs made a difference back from injury.
Another tough game next week against Ourimbah.
Lets see if we can be the ones doing the intimidating?
Narcolepsy; n is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness in which a person experiences extreme fatigue, and possibly falls asleep at inappropriate times, such as while at work or at school, and often while playing soccer for the Toukley 15A’s………..
And so it was as the 15As took on bottom placed Woy Woy at Harry Moore oval.
After controlling the ball well for the first 10-15 minutes and scoring from a corner to lead 1-0, the side decided to clock off, and forgot completely about passing to a player in a better position, talking to each other, and contesting the ball on the ground and in the air, and decided the best way to play was just hoof it downfield to a waiting Woy Woy player!
How Woy Woy didn’t score the equaliser, and even take the lead is a miracle, thanks mainly to some desperate defence from the Toukley backs and especially Jaydn in goal. Jaydn won’t be talking much at training this week as he rests his vocal chords after screaming at his team mates for the full 70 minutes.
Corey scored his second header for the game from a Tom Carlson free kick in the second half, to take the lead to 2-0.
Positives from the game were few, Carl never stopped running as usual, Tom Clark showed good aggression in the contest, and Raleigh was solid as usual. Keelin found out you can be yellow carded for screaming at the opposition player in possession!!
Tuesday at training should be a ball. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Round 3 Toukley 15A vs Killarney at EDSAC
Today the boys travelled to EDSAC at sunny Bateau Bay for their clash against Killarney.
Would they be able to remain undefeated, and keep their spot on top of the table?
With Tom Sigley out injured, Keelan was moved into the midfield in an attempt to gain more possession. The boys started well, although a misunderstanding between Jaydn and Tom Carlson let Killarney get an early goal to lead 1-0.
This would be a test of the team’s character as they haven’t been behind yet this year. Would they be good enough to come from behind?
Would they indeed? Corey opened the scoring for Toukley not long after and before we knew it we were in front 2-1. The Toukley attack was starting to find the Killarney backs wanting, and with the Toukley defenders snuffing out their attack, it was forcing them into long range shots, which were no problem for Jaydn.
Several promising attacks led to scoring opportunities but the shooting was a bit astray.
Corey scored again just before half-time and we went in at the break up 3-1.
It was really pleasing to see the backs follow Martins instructions from Tuesdays “honesty session” and run the ball back at the opposition rather than just belt it back downfield. This tactic led to two of the first half goals for Corey.
Tom Carlson, Tom Smith and Jeremy made numerous runs with the ball turning defence into attack time and again
Carl, Andrew and Tom Clark were having a better game with their interchange passing and talking a vast improvement on last week.
After half time Killarney came back hard, as we knew they would, and unfortunately some of our players thought a 3-1 lead would be enough and went off the boil for a while.
Killarney took a leaf from our first half and turned defence into attack to launch a long counterattacking raid into our half and we eventually ran out of defenders for Killarney to score a good goal to get within 1.
This woke the team up and we began to play better controlling possession and working harder in defence. Corey added his fourth goal and the game was ours when the ref called time soon after. Still unbeaten and the target on our backs is getting bigger every week!
Carl was everywhere as usual, Corey was deadly and Tom Smith and Jeremy never stopped putting in.
Well done.
15A Toukley V Kincumber at Frost Reserve
After last weeks strong showing against Terrigal, the boys travelled to Frost Reserve at Kincumber to take on the Roos.
With Keelin back from his stint playing in Micronesia, we were at full strength for the first time this season.
Unfortunately, the attitude was not as good as last week and they started slowly, allowing the Roos to dominate possession and field position for the first quarter of the game.
As the half progressed, we slowly got into the game and our control and aggression on the ball improved.
Corey was dangerous as usual up front, but with Kincumber playing five players in defence, his opportunities were few and far between. This is an area where some of the other players need to step up and take more responsibility for scoring goals.
The two team’s defences cancelled each other out and a score of 0-0 at half time was a fair indication of the evenness of the game so far.
After Martins gentle words of encouragement at the break, the boys went out in the second half determined to lift their game. The intensity increased and the attack improved with more forays into the Kincumber area finally paying off when Corey was fouled in the box and Tom Carlson did the rest to lead 1-0.
The Toukley attack started to make inroads but were unable to get another goal, while the backs desperate defence kept the Roos scoreless. With injuries to Sigley and Calagno, we were down to 1 sub, and the pace of the game and the heat meant the boys had to work damn hard for the win. Some of the players need to work on their fitness levels to last the full 70 minutes, however it was a gutsy performance to come away with the points.
Best performers were Jaydn at the back, pulling off a couple of great saves under immense pressure, while Raleigh and Carl were tireless, and Josh Spalding ran himself into the ground in attack.
Another hard game next week against Killarney, can we get the points for the 3rd week in a row???
Special mention to Gabi, for washing and ironing the shirts, and not sleeping until they were safely back in Martins hands.
That was possibly because anyone who forgets to bring the shirts for the match, has to do a nudie run around the oval just before kickoff.
You have been warned!!
15A Toukley V Terrigal Round 1 at Harry Moore
There was always going to a lot riding on today’s game.
A good result would go a long way to giving the boys confidence that they were up to it, at this level.
A bad result would have a negative effect on their confidence, so a good start was vital.
However, nobody expected to be up 1-0 after 30 seconds! Corey was bought down in the box in the first 10 seconds and Tom Carlson didn’t miss with his penalty shot.
Not long after Corey capitalised on some great work by the Toukley midfielders to take the ball deep into the Terrigal left corner and then beat the Terrigal backs in a weaving run to score the second.
The Toukley mids consistently won the battle for possession, and their passing and ball control so early in the season was excellent. The backs frustrated Terrigal constantly with their great defence, denying Terrigal any scoring opportunities. When Corey added another just before half time we went to the break 3-0 up.
Terrigal came out hard in the second half, but the boys stood up to the added pressure well, even though they conceded an unlucky own goal from a deflection.
Corey added another in the second half, and another by Josh Spalding took the score to 5-1 at full time.
Credit to Tom Carlson, who was rock solid in defence at the back along with the rest of the backs. Karl’s workrate was outstanding as he and the midfielders worked non-stop and dominated possession in middle of the field for much of the game. The forwards converted pressure and possession into goals, and didn’t stop attacking all game.
Jayden was excellent in goal, showing great aggression and judgement coming out to snuff out the Terrigal attack.
Kincumber at Kincumber next week and they will be tough, and will be expecting a hard game, so the boys will have to be up for it.
