In August last year, Greg Ko-Cass was announced as joining us for the 2018 season as our Men’s Premier League coach. Both the Club and Greg were eager to see what the New Year would bring.
With the BPL season starting at the end of this week and the first game on the 18/3 against Avoca at Pluim Park. Our Season Launch was the first time we gathered and meet Greg’s crew as well as being able to meet the majority of the Men’s Premier League Squad. A mixture of old and new faces all suited up in their polo’s, anxiously waiting to start kicking the ball.
Our First Grade team were able to start the season off early as Toukley Gorokan FC was signed up for the FFA Cup for the first time. The FFA Cup is a national knockout tournament run by Football Federation Australia in conjunction with every State and Territory Member Federation in the country.
Our Men's Premier League First Grade team road tripped two hrs to Jonas Bradley Park where they were to play The Ponds FC. The trip and effort was well worth it with our Men's Premier League First Grade team defeating Ponds FC 1-0.
A great start to the season and I’m sure more great news to come.
For a coach pre-season is easily one of the most stressful times of the footballing year, from clubs trying to entice your players away to myself likewise trying to do the same to other clubs it is in a few words a dog fight. So many rumours and offers flying around that mine and bens phones do not stop ringing. Thankfully that is now over and we can get down to the football.
Grade had a couple of trial training sessions before Xmas just to see what players where likely to come back and maybe look to join us. Unbelievably we had a total of 42 players that where interested. Picking a squad of 30 was therefore going to be difficult. Once January came along we started proper pre season training and it has been the best I have seen from the boys in the 3 years I have now been here. The urgency and wanting to push themselves has been top draw, we almost have a full house of players at every training session which for training 3 times a week is extremely good.
I will finish this post with this years grade squad, it's the strongest I have personally seen us and we hope to push ourselves all the way to premier league this year.
Adam Blanco - joined us from tuggerah, has excellent ball skills and quick feet, will be a great asset.
Andy Halliwell - one of our older players yet still fitter than anyone else, his desire to win is second to none
Ben Cowan - fast and strong in the tackle, has improved ten fold in the last couple of years.
Ben Hallett - had a year off last season to spend time with his baby, has the ability to have a great season
Ben Johnson - this years apprentice, great ability and sees a pass before anyone else. Big year ahead
Brendan Henry - big year for him, finally showing the ability to play hard and well without the getting cards
Brent Lewis - hardest person ever to leave out of a starting line up because he always creates something
Brett Cowling - frustrating injury filled season last year, this year if stays fit could be the difference for us
Dane Carroll - joined us from budgewoi, big signing as has brilliant vision and ability to keep the ball
Dean Pepper - most assists last season in 1st grade and I want him to be looking to better that.
Jai Kelly - has the ability to single handily win a game and has done. I think we will see his best year in 2015
James Baker - reads the game extremely well, seems to always know what pass opposition going to make
James Gleeson - tenacious terror that never leaves a winger alone, has the ability to push for 1st grade
Jarrod Bowman - snapped acl last year, once he starts training again it will be like getting a new player.
Josh Ellery - horrific leg break 3 years ago if he comes good could be the best signing I have ever made.
Josh Higgins - this years captain, great presence and composure on the ball and can popup with a goal to
Joshua Bettison - joined from tuggerah, is getting better and better the more I see, could be a great signing
Josh Starkey - Mr Gangly legs causing trouble for anyone he runs at, great crosser of the ball.
Matty Ferraro - excellent finisher, and if can up his work rate a little could be this years top scorer
Michael Dunlop - signing from Budgewoi, great left foot, strong tackler and has a big part to play this year
Nathan Walker - Mr dependable, never misses training and will give 110% with whatever you ask of him
Phil McLoughlin - has improved more than anyone over the last 3 years, will start as our no 1 keeper
Rob Duncan - excellent tackler, and reads the game really well, expecting a big year from him
Rob Darby - could lose both legs and tell me he still fit to play, great shot stopper and will push phil for no1
Sam Christie - has such ability he could become one of the best players on the coast.
Shane Eberle - good leader and strong, he will win big tackles in any game he plays.
Todd Buxton - another that will put his body on the line for 3 points. Fantastic player.
Trent Cowan - his versatility makes him a very important player. Can pass a ball through the smallest gap
Troy Runge - signed from Budgewoi, best strike partner I ever had. Will score a lot of goals this year.
Not forgetting Ben Nichols, absolute best 2nd in charge could ask for, our backing of each other is key to this season being a success.
Till next time #TGFC
